You might have never heard about the concept of a pancake welding hood. But when it comes to working outside on a pipeline, it’s something common.
Not that a lot of people talk about it much.
A pancake welding hood is a round and flat object that has a shape or form of a pancake on the front of it. And it can be used to protect the right or left side of your face. This is a huge advantage because it can protect you from welding flash in virtually any position you find yourself.

Although you may be a little unsure of how to use it, it’s really quite easy. If you are left-handed then you should use it on the left side of your face. And, as you can guess, if you are right handed you will use it on the right side of your face. It’s just that easy. It’s simple and very intuitive so you can just grab it and use it.
At its core, the pancake welding helmet protects your face from the welding sparks and UV rays from the arc flash. It is a product that you are definitely going to need every time you need to weld something. And if you’re out there working on the pipeline all day it’s something you absolutely have to have.
The Secret of the Pancake Welding Hood
One of the most interesting thing about these Pancake welding hoods is the “balsa box”.
This is the inside section of the pancake hood and it’s made from wood so that it can be custom shaped and sanded to fit each person individually.
The balsa box of the pancake hood holds the lens in place, so you don’t have to wear any goggles.
The box fits tightly around the users’ face to eliminate flash back or glare from outside lights or reflection from welding. And if you’ve ever welded outside or caught a reflection from back of the filter lens in a standard welding helmet, you’ll understand immediately what a benefit this is.
The pancake welding hoods are mostly handmade. They are not mass produced like many other products. These are very specific, custom products that need to be carefully created so that the person who is going to use the product can adjust the balsa box in a way that is comfortable for them.
The pancake hoods are designed to adapt perfectly to the shape of the face of the person that is using it. The product has to contour the face and even go a little past the outside of their face in order to assure a full protection, because, at the end of the day, that is what it was designed for.
The balsa box is a very small box that is made out of 100% wood. It is very thick and heavy to allow for a better level of protection. The balsa box surrounds the face and the eyes, and it acts as a holder for the lenses. This makes it a very secure and protective product.
Pancake Hood – The Custom Fit
The balsa box was made with wood so that it can be in contact with the face without it being uncomfortable. The edges of the balsa box can be slightly modified so that it can fit and adjust perfectly to the shape of the face and the eyes of each user. When a balsa box is properly fitted, no UV rays or sparks are going to enter the hood as it covers the eyes and face entirely, ensuring that all of the access angles are closed.
The balsa box is almost always painted in black on the inside of it. This is done specifically so that the eyes have even more protection. Light colors might allow for reflection of the welding arc on the inside part of the balsa box – and we don’t want that. The black color absorbs all of the light to help with the level of protection.
Pancake welding hoods are made out of wood, just like the balsa box. Actually, most of the product has been created with pine wood. Most of the wood that is used to build these object is imported from South America. The reason for this is that the wood from there is cheaper as there is a lot of it. The balsa wood is very soft which allows it to be contoured easily. In addition to that, balsa is a very light weight variety of wood.
Because of how light the balsa wood is, it’s going to be easy to wear the pancake welding hood for long periods of time. And because of this you aren’t going to feel tired even if you wear it a lot every day.
Adjustments and Other Materials
They also come with an adjustable headband that makes the balsa box “stick” to your head. This ensures that the helmet is going to be held in the exact place that it should be. So you don’t have to worry about it falling. The pressure points where the helmet sits on your head are quite wide apart, and this makes wearing the product very easy.
The external part of the pancake welding shield is often made out of a piece of molded phenolic. These type of hoods are typically made out of one piece. These are also made much thicker in order to handle the use and abuse that typically comes with welding outside.
That said, some manufacturers choose to make the helmet out of two pieces. The two pieces are then fastened together with metal screws in order to make it more comfortable and secure.
Some manufacturers will even make the product out of leather and create a very artistic hood.
There are many different options and styles to choose from, but they all offer a lot of protection.
The Pipeliner Welding Hood
The pipeliner welding hood is a little different than the pancake welding hood. It’ss similar to a regular welding helmet completely encasing your face and neck.
It’s got a bit of a conical shape to it to help deflect weld spatter and arc flash away from the person wearing it.
They are also very narrow to help them fit into tight spaces. This making them a little less bulky than a traditional helmet.
